Although we typically associate jack-0'-lanterns with carved pumpkins at Halloween, there is a much longer tradition of carving vegetable lanterns in Ireland and Britain.  And, instead of using pumpkins, they carved lanterns from root vegetables such as turnips.  So if you're in the mood to carve a lantern and a pumpkin just doesn't turn up, try a turnip.
